Day 11 - Trenton, ME to Boothbay, ME

This was a short Labor Day campsite move, made twice as long by a scenic excursion.

The Route
We left Trenton on ME-3, picked up US-1 at Ellsworth, left US-1 at Orland for an excursion to Castine, Penobscot, Deer Isle, Stonington and Blue Hill, returned to US-1 and followed it to ME-27 near North Edgecomb.  ME-27 took us to the campground.

About the Day
We awoke to an overcast sky and 55°.  A misty rain started while we were hooking up.  It continued most of the day.  We were on the road by 9:20am.  Traffic was light.  Many businesses were closed early in the day.  The sun peeked out briefly around noon in Stonington.  We stopped driving at 4:15pm.  It was raining steadily at 7:30pm.

Along the Way
Castine and Stonington were the picturesque and lively highlights of the National Geographics excursion.

Castine is the home of Maine Maritime Academy ...
Downtown Castine
Castine Harbor
Caterpillar Hill offers a nice view of Deer Isle, Penobscot Bay and the Bay Islands.

The bridge to Deer Isle is impressive.

Stonington is the end of the road for ME-15.  They have boats and a ferry if you want to go further south.

We were fortunate to find a unique, double parallel-parking space (with no entry/exit barriers) free in Stonington and had a very nice tuna melt sandwich lunch at the Harbor Cafe.

After returning to US-1, we followed the Penobscot Bay coastline from Bucksport, to Belfast, Camden, Rockport, and Rockland.  Lots of water was just a glance away.

Travel Trivia
GPS estimate = 97 miles, odometer actual = 193 miles.  The GPS gets a pass because it wasn't made aware of the National Geographics Deer Isle Drive we added.

The Campground
We're staying at Shore Hills Campground in Boothbay, ME.

A light rain started as we backed into site #9.  We did a complete setup in the rain.  The campground has cable TV, but no internet.  The Verizon hotspot signal isn't strong enough for picture transfers.

Tomorrow
We'll decide in the morning.
